Monkeying Around is the Key to Success?

You could make a million dollars in the next 90 days.  Seriously.

It would take complete and utter focus for most hours of your day.  It would take the courage to look foolish, perhaps, while trying out different strategies.  But you could do it.  Or whatever else you’ve been “trying” to do.  You just have to re-train your brain.

In a fascinating video on TED (I love this website!), neuroscientist Michael Merzenich discusses how in response to experiences, knowledge and environments, the brain literally, physically, re-wires itself to adapt new habits, actions and practices in our physical selves to achieve desired outcomes — or to recover lost function.  The technical term used to describe this phenomenon is “brain plasticity.” (Note: The video is a little technical and might be considered boring by some standards but I’m a total nerd; watch at your own risk!)

Mr. Merzenich discusses a brain plasticity experiment (this part of his talk begins around 8m 50s) whereby a monkey is trained to manipulate a tool that will enable him to perform various functions, such as eating.

In the beginning, says Mr. Merzenich, the monkey could not correctly use the tool at all, and each of his attempts—or tactics—for doing so was elaborate and vastly different from the last.  Over time, as the monkey continued to focus on mastering the tool, using various strategies and tactics, his success rate adjusted to 1 out of 8, or 12.5% (yes, a total F!).  But gradually the monkey developed a strategy, after 700 or so tries, that enabled him to perform the task.  It took him 700 tries to perfect his tactics!

In Mr. Merzenich’s words, once the monkey achieved his desired outcome his performance was: Flawless, never failing, and always successful in allowing him to retrieve his food with this tool every time.  In addition, the monkey completed the task in a ”beautifully regulated” and “highly repeated” manner time after time.  He created and relentlessly repeated a system that worked—and it worked 100% of the time!  From 12.5% to 100%.

An examination of the monkey after he had perfected the task showed physical re-wiring of the circuitry of his brain, and—get this—physical adjustments in the regions of his hands!  His body literally adjusted to serve him best to achieve his desired outcome.  And this was no anomaly: Other experiments with various desired outcomes have been conducted with similar results.

Your success at whatever you want to do is in your willingness to go through the “process of perfection.”  Time and time again the monkey tried his hand at correctly operating the tool.  He was all over the place initially. Couldn’t get it right at all.  But as he worked at it and changed strategies rapidly from one thing to another his physiological and psychological self adapted to the task at hand.  We can learn from this monkey that the old saying, ”Practice makes perfect,” holds true.

Look how many times the monkey had to go through the process — 700!  How many times have you tried what you’ve been attempting in business, or otherwise?  Two, 5, 100?  Have you actually gone through the process physically or just thought about it?  Did you quit too soon or have you slowed down because you’re tired, irritated, frustrated or annoyed?  Have you tried one thing after another and another and another—seeking not necessarily to look perfect or like you know what you’re doing—but instead seeking to find the path to what you really, really want regardless of how you “look” in the process?

Take a note from this monkey’s playbook.  Re-train your brain.  Focus on success and get busy.  You were literally created to be pliable — mentally and physically — to achieve whatsoever you desire.  Challenge and rebuild yourself with new knowledge, new tactics, new people and new experiences, and re-create your reality.  Find what works and DO it.  If a monkey can try and finally succeed — with absolute certainty and perfection after 700 times — then we can too!  Here’s to monkeying around!

Follow Trends to Make More Ends

Trends are powerful flashlights that shine light on what will generate wealth in the months and years ahead.  Anyone in business who tracks, follows and capitalizes on trends can generate lots of money fast if they have a well-executed and timely plan.

Here are trends that have shifted and created wealth:

  • The world shifted from tapes, to CDs to digitally downloaded music.
  • Concern for the environment (and high gas prices) created a renewed interest in small vehicles.
  • A desire to reduce air polluting emissions brought about hybrid cars—including hybrid sports cars.
  • Fashion trends change every season necessitating the need for more clothes shopping.
  • The desire to do more with a mobile phone brought us from the walkie talkie looking models of the 90s to the small, multi-functional handsets we use today.
  • A desire for less stress and more relaxation—and a taste of the good life—created a booming massage therapy business.
  • Tougher job requirements and the need for two incomes—as well as higher incomes—brought about the establishment and acceptance of online college and accelerated educational programs.

All of these trends have created wealth for the individuals who recognized the opportunity, created a product or service that would fulfill a need relative to the trend, and executed in a well thought out and timely manner.

So, the question today for you is: Are you in position to take advantage of the wealth building opportunities that are being created by the next big trends?  And what are the next big trends?  Here’s my take on five:

  1. The American public has been shaken up by the world’s economic turmoil.  There are signs of recovery and we certainly will come out of the slump but a “cost-conscious” society will endure; so any product or service that can be offered for a reduced price will be popular in the long run.   What products or services have not made the shift?  Identify them, make the shift and make a pretty penny as a result.
  2. With an unsustainably costly healthcare system, and the dawning realization that there are no lasting ways to “have our cake” and be thin and healthy too, there is a shifting focus toward real, true exercise, eating and lifestyle habits that will create long-term health, wellness and thinness.  If you can offer an affordable product or service that helps people move away from diets, pills and potions on to new habits and practices you will build a profitable business.
  3. Gender roles and expectations are being questioned and expanded at home and work.  This means more stay-at-home dads, more women in powerful positions, less focus on gender-assigned roles and more focus on who is best for the job.  This is a broad-brushing trend that will create opportunities for new kinds of organizations, counseling, consulting, books, seminars and other products and services that will help people understand, cope with and adjust to this new reality.
  4. The economy goes down and crime goes up but our prison system is already teeming with inmates.  As budgets are stressed there may be a few new prisons built, but not enough.  This will mean more early releases for non-violent criminals and the risk of these offenders returning to the streets only to perpetrate crimes again.  This creates the opportunity for job training programs, counseling services, family planning/management services and other social services, or products.  If you have a heart for helping people and would like to do well too, this could be the trend for you.
  5. Historically, during tough times, liquor and entertainment sales go up.  This time around has been no exception.  If you’ve got a great idea for alcohol or entertainment and a great marketing mind, now is the time to get started!  People are looking for an escape and if you can open the door to relief for the public then you can open your bank account to an influx of financial thanks from the people who will pay to enjoy your drink or entertainment experience!

Ms. CEO of the Week - Kaira Akita, Budding Hollywood Actor & Entrepreneur Extraordinaire

Kaira Akita - KairaAkita.comMeet our Ms.CEO of the Week, Kaira Akita, a professional actor and founder of A Clothes Encounter, the new way to shop!

Interview by Linda Day
Editor-in-Chief, Ms.CEO

Linda: You have an impressive list of credits in business and in the entertainment world; how do you balance being a business woman and a creative professional at the same time?
Kaira: I try to make it a point to seek out business ventures that compliment my work as an entertainer, so that my two worlds can build on each other.

Linda: What do you find is your biggest challenge as a woman in business?
Kaira: Maintaining balance between my personal responsibilities and relationships while trying to build my business.

Linda: What are the most effective time management skills you’ve developed?
Kaira: Write it down! I find I don’t get so overwhelmed when I write down a realistic daily agenda and stick to it.

Linda: How important is it to make time for you?
Kaira: It’s extremely important to make time for myself. But since I enjoy being on the go, sometimes it can be difficult to know what that entails!

Linda: Does your business affect your personal life? If so, how and if not, how do you juggle your two worlds?
Kaira: Absolutely! Running your own business takes an enormous amount of time and energy, which cuts into your personal time. I have friends who never call me or invite me out anymore because they assume I am busy. My family often worries that I am “doing too much” or not getting enough rest. So it can be difficult to juggle the two worlds but it is definitely worth it once you hit your stride and can find that balance for a happy, successful life.

Linda: What is the most gratifying “thing” about being an accomplished professional woman?
Kaira: Seeing your small idea turn into something of substance, something that others respect and value. That’s extremely rewarding.

Linda: What are your thoughts on the way women are perceived in the corporate world and do you believe women are becoming more respected as CEOs and business leaders?
Kaira: I think women in corporate America are finally being viewed as valuable, but there is still a lot of work to be done. Women are still daunted by the expectation of having it all — career, family, children — while their male counterparts are immune to such expectations.

Linda: Do you consider yourself to be an “every woman?”
Kaira: Absolutely! There’s nothing that I’ve done that is particularly special or unique. I’m not the best or the smartest…but not many can outwork me!

Linda: Tell me about A Clothes Encounter and how it came about.
Kaira: A Clothes Encounter is an upscale consignment shopping event held once a season at different Atlanta hot spots, complete with savings up to 75% off retail, signature cocktails, music, and more. Select proceeds from each event benefit charity.

ACE came about after I had a closet sale during a move to a new place. Women kept saying that it would be great if I could do the same with their old clothes. So, after sitting on the idea a while, I decided that I could make a viable business out of doing just that. I then combined my event experience and created the concept of a shopping party. To keep overhead low and demand high, I decided to hold the parties at various chic venues around town (as opposed to renting a traditional store front) just once a season.

Linda: What made you choose these two particular fields of work?
Kaira: They chose me!

Linda: Did you grow up with strong business women around you?
Kaira: Yes. My mom introduced me to the idea of entrepreunership when I was in high school. She owns a financial/debt management home-based business.

Linda: Tell me about your work with the Alliance Theatre. What did you take from that experience?
Kaira: The Alliance was a great place for me to submerge myself in marketing, promotions, event planning, advertising, and PR. As the Advertising and Promotions Coordinator, I planned opening night events for major productions such as The Color Purple, helped develop marketing and promotion strategies for each production, and served as the editor of the playbills. This experience taught me how to juggle a lot of responsibilities at once without sacrificing the details.

Linda: What are your long term goals?
Kaira: To expand my brand as a successful actress, producer, entrepreneur, and philanthropist.

Linda: What would be Kaira Akita’s “Golden Rule” in business?
Kaira: It’s all in the details. If you have an amazing concept and solid strategy, it could be lost if you don’t pay attention to the small details that make a big difference to your customers.

Linda: What do you think every woman should know when preparing for her own business?
Kaira: You have to learn that you can’t do it all yourself. It’s hard to give up control, but at some point you have to do so in order to keep your sanity and to get the results you want.

Linda: What do you want your fans to know about you?
Kaira: I’m so grateful to be able to get up everyday and have the freedom to do what I love. It hasn’t always been that way, so I cherish every minute of it!
